I am desperately seeking ways to focus my attention away from the craziness in the world today. I turned to AI to ask for ideas to distract and relax me from this insane moment in history.

My request was for 5 activities that are easy for most people to do when they are feeling overwhelmed. I also asked that the ideas cost nothing. Perplexity gave me some excellent ideas.

beautiful empty beach with gentle waves and sea foam coming ashore.
Here's what I think about when I am meditating or trying to relax.

Here they are:

Meditate for Five Minutes

Take a brief meditation break to calm your mind. Simply sit comfortably, focus on your breath, and practice deep breathing. Inhale for five counts, exhale for five counts, and let your thoughts drift away. This technique can help reduce anxiety and provide a moment of peace.

Take a Quick Walk

Walking is an accessible and powerful stress reducer. Whether around your neighborhood, a local park, or even inside your home, physical movement can help clear your mind and improve your mood. Regular walking has been shown to improve cardiovascular health and overall well-being.

Practice Deep Breathing and Stretching

Combine simple stretching with deep breathing exercises. You can do this from a chair by:

  • Sitting with a straight, relaxed back

  • Taking slow, deep breaths

  • Performing gentle stretches like shoulder rolls or arm stretches.

Listen to Music and Dance

Put on your favorite playlist and let yourself move. Dancing can be an excellent way to release tension, engage your mind, and trigger positive memories. If you're not comfortable dancing, simply listening to music can also help reduce stress.

Try a Quick Mindfulness Technique

Use visual imagery or progressive relaxation to center yourself. Close your eyes and imagine a peaceful place - like a calm beach or quiet garden. Focus on the details, using all your senses to create a mental escape that helps you relax and reset.

These are all great ideas - that all of us can do with very little effort or money.

I went back and asked for 3 additional ideas that are more creative and maybe cost a little money - Perplexity didn't disappoint!

A table filled with orgami birds and paper.
This looks fun!

Here are three creative stress-relief activities that require a bit more effort and a small investment.

Pottery or Ceramic Art Pottery offers a deeply therapeutic experience through tactile creativity. You can start by:

  • Finding local community centers or art school classes

  • Purchasing a beginner's clay kit

  • Learning basic techniques through online tutorials

The process of molding clay can significantly decrease stress levels and improve your mood while providing a sense of accomplishment.

Origami Practice This ancient art of paper folding requires patience and focus, helping to melt away anxieties. You can:

  • Purchase an origami book or starter kit

  • Watch free YouTube tutorials

  • Collect specialized origami paper

Origami is a mindful practice that helps improve your folding skills while providing a calming mental escape.

Paint by Numbers This creative activity is perfect for those who want to explore painting without needing prior artistic training. Benefits include:

  • Structured creativity that reduces performance anxiety

  • A relaxing way to take your mind off troubles

  • Affordable starter kits available online

  • The satisfaction of creating a complete artwork

Paint by numbers allows you to be creative while following a guided process, making it an excellent stress-relief activity.

Each of these activities offers a unique way to channel stress through creativity, requiring a small financial investment and a bit more effort than basic stress-relief techniques.

Hope you can find something here that helps you find a little distraction when you need it.

Sending love and light your way today!
